Dr. Thompson is currently the President of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
He is also an Attending Cardiologist, St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri and Professor of Medicine, The University of Missouri – Kansas City.
Prior to his Presidency, Dr Thompson served for four years on the ASNC Executive Council and 8 years previously on the ASNC Board of Directors.
In addition to serving on numerous ASNC committees, Dr Thompson served as ASNC Scientific Program Chair in 2016.
Dr Thompson is a member of the editorial board and Guest Editor of the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Thompson has been actively involved in advocacy for ASNC and the American College of Cardiology for many years, specifically focused in the areas of coding and billing and serves as Chair of the ACC Coding Task Force.
He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society and was the recipient of the American Medical Association’s Burgess Gordon Memorial CPT award and the University of Missouri – Kansas City’s Allen Forker Cardiovascular Teaching Award.
Dr. Thompson’s imaging practice focuses on PET and SPECT nuclear cardiology techniques as well as CT techniques of coronary calcium scoring, coronary and vascular CT angiography, and his CV includes numerous publications in these areas.
His research interest also includes optimizing imaging techniques and the search for atherosclerosis in ancient people.
He has authored over 150 scientific papers and book chapters.
